I never really realize how badly I need a spa day until I walk through the doors and hear the gentle trickling of a fountain and smell the fragrance emanating from flickering candles. Then it's like, "Oh, that's right - there are places created specifically to pamper me and help me relax. May I live here forever, please?". Burke Williams in Woodland Hills is the perfect setting for this kind of escape - a bright, cozy space that borrows from the classic Hamptons aesthetic to give every visitor a little bit of East Coast resort charm in Los Angeles. Before I even changed into my super plush robe and slippers (why do spa slippers ALWAYS feel so amazing??), I already felt calmed by the bright and airy space that felt both like an elegant coastal home and modern retreat. The water feature was my favorite part of this room of the spa - I *may* have spent too much time watching it and being totally amused.
I eventually did tear myself away from the fountain and made my way to the locker room. Which, locker room is such an understatement! Between the private spa baths, sauna, and steam room - I don't know if I've even been more detoxed or hydrated in my life. I would go sit in the steam room honestly every day. It just felt so good, and I'm saying that as someone from Louisiana who cries every time I feel a bit of humidity in the air. I swear, every time I came out of one of these amenities - my skin looked better. I was actually glowing - which is why working up a sweat in a steam room is so much more fun than say...actually going to the gym.
Something I found so neat was that there's this little bell that one of the spa attendants will come and ring at the half hour to let all the ladies know its time for their services. Everyone who works at the spa could not have been more lovely or attentive - they actually know your name and scheduled services. Such a small touch, but so important to feel even that much more pampered and special during your time there.
I didn't play with a lot of the products while I was there, but I did get my custom blend bar on, which was another perfect personal touch. I'm a spa veteran because I am very much about treating oneself, and you typically get a few oils to choose from for your service - but this was next level. I don't know if it was all the Hampton-inspired decor, but instead of my typical lavender, I had a really gorgeous blend made that was heavier and woodier. I was already feeling pretty good, but that brought my relaxation to a new level. One where I actually shut off my phone for once.
I had the pleasure of having two treatments during my visit - one which was a neck and scalp massage in the Garden Room, perhaps the only truly quiet place in L.A. Behind all of the lush green walls are little enclaves where you can just sit and enjoy your time. My massage therapist was so attentive to my past injuries and sensitivities - I really zoned out for the first time in a long time and let go. It only lasted 20 minutes, but that was all I needed. It put me into the right mind to enjoy the spa in the way it's meant to be enjoyed.
My second treatment was a blowout and believe me when I tell you - my hair has never felt or looked so good! If I lived closer to Woodland Hills, I would see Michelle once a week, easy. My blowout habit would turn into a full-blown obsession. The products they use, Shu Uemura, are out of this world AND color safe for my purple hair! Again, I have to mention how great my stylist was because she talked to me about my hair, my style, and what I really wanted that day. All this effort to individualize your experience is what really makes a day at Burke Williams a luxury!
Even though I've lived in L.A. for two and half years, there's still so much I'm discovering about this city and Burke Williams is now one of my absolute musts if you live here or you're traveling. Go steam, soak, sauna, and spa and let me know how it goes!
