Let’s get personal for a few minutes, babes. I want to talk about something that can seem scary or daunting or shameful, but it’s not. I know it’s not, because it’s something I’ve done myself. I want to talk about Plan B One-Step® emergency contraception and help debunk some myths about it – like who it’s for and when to use it. You guys know from following my blog and Instagram that I am so pro women’s empowerment, and part of that is pushing for more education for us women on our bodies and our healthcare options. I’m very fortunate that I grew up surrounded by people that were very open and sex-positive – so I knew from an early age how to be safe, take precaution, and protect myself for when the time came so I could be prepared.
There’s a total misconception, almost a stigma, about what “kind of girl” uses Plan B One-Step®. It’s not only for the single, “party girl” – though she has the right to make her own decisions about her sexual behaviors without guilt or shame. I like to think of Plan B One-Step® as my “Plan B” for an “oops” moment. An “oops moment” comes in all shapes and sizes. For one person, it may mean forgetting a pill before an unexpected one-night stand. For someone else, it may mean the condom broke with her husband. There’s no one-size-fits-all for using emergency contraception. Plan B One-Step® helps prevent pregnancy when used as directed and taken within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex or birth control failure. The sooner it's taken, the better it works.
When I used Plan B One-Step®, I was in a committed relationship. I know “never say never,” but having a baby is not a part of my plan – now or in the future. This is something I’ve known with certainty. My career as a style + travel blogger is my priority, and I am not going to let an accident, like birth control failure, derail my hard work, my plans, or my lifestyle.
I loved my partner at the time very much and maybe did see a future with him, but we also were in no place to have a baby – emotionally or financially. Taking Plan B One-Step® was the responsible thing to do for myself, for my partner, for both of our families and anyone else that could possibly have been affected by an unplanned pregnancy. Getting Plan B One-Step® couldn’t have been easier – I went to my local pharmacy—Plan B One-Step® is available over-the-counter and can usually be found in the family planning aisle at many retail stores without a prescription or ID and there are no age restrictions —and my pharmacist was super discreet and went over the proper instructions for taking the pill. I took it, and went on with my day. It was totally worth it to know that when my plan A did fail, I had a plan B.
So there’s my story, but here is some additional information about Plan B One-Step® to help you learn more:
-Plan B One-Step® emergency contraception is a backup plan that helps prevent pregnancy when used as directed and taken within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex or birth control failure. The sooner it's taken, the better it works.
-Plan B One-Step® contains levonorgestrel, the same hormone used in many birth control pills—just at a higher dose. It should not be used as regular birth control, because it is not as effective. Use as directed.
-Plan B One-Step® should be used as directed.
-Plan B One-Step® is not an abortion pill. It will not work if you are already pregnant and will not affect an existing pregnancy. It is not intended for routine use because it is not as effective as regular birth control methods. It does not protect you against HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
-When used as directed, Plan B One-Step® helps prevent nearly 7 out of every 8 potential pregnancies. Some women may experience side effects, such as a period that is lighter, heavier, early or late; nausea; lower abdominal pain/cramps; tiredness; headache; dizziness; breast tenderness; and vomiting.
-According to the Guttmacher Institute, 45 percent of all pregnancies in the U.S. are unintended and 41 percent of those pregnancies are due to inconsistent or incorrect use of contraception.*
If you have any questions about whether you should take Plan B One-Step®, you should ask a healthcare professional. An open and honest dialogue with yourself, your doctor, your partner, and even your friends or family can help you make the appropriate decisions that are best for you when it comes to your sexual health. With this information at your disposal, we’re all now equipped with the best tools to help make the best decisions for ourselves.

So you guys know my forever happy place in L.A. is Burke Williams, right? I spend, and I'm not kidding, HOURS there sweating it out in the steam room and sauna in between sips of their delicious tea and fruit-infused water. L.A. is my heart, but if you don't escape it every so often - you start going a little crazy! Finding Burke Williams has been a been a blessing to me, no longer do I have to drive all the way to Palm Springs for an escape. I can have one right in the middle of the city - a place where I can shut out the world (and my iPhone) and just focus on self-care.
I was actually just there this week, getting my skin right before a long flight, and was so excited to find out that they have launched their online skincare store! To celebrate, we've teamed up for a giveaway for all of you! Triple C is one of their most popular products - it contains 3 potent forms of vitamin C to stimulate collagen, firm skin, and lighten dark spots - perfect for healing skin after active sunny months promoting tautness and supplying hydration and antioxidants during cooler weather. So basically, everything you need after a long day in the sun or after crossing an ocean coming back from summer vacation. We all know airplane is a murder on your skin, and now that it's summer - we all need to take extra measures to protect and restore our skin. I mean - has anyone else gotten a tan just from being stuck in L.A. traffic?
To win bottle of Triple C ($65) AND a 3-Day Spa Pass (valued at $135) - comment on this blog post and remember to leave your email! I'll be selecting a winner on July 4th!
I never really realize how badly I need a spa day until I walk through the doors and hear the gentle trickling of a fountain and smell the fragrance emanating from flickering candles. Then it's like, "Oh, that's right - there are places created specifically to pamper me and help me relax. May I live here forever, please?". Burke Williams in Woodland Hills is the perfect setting for this kind of escape - a bright, cozy space that borrows from the classic Hamptons aesthetic to give every visitor a little bit of East Coast resort charm in Los Angeles. Before I even changed into my super plush robe and slippers (why do spa slippers ALWAYS feel so amazing??), I already felt calmed by the bright and airy space that felt both like an elegant coastal home and modern retreat. The water feature was my favorite part of this room of the spa - I *may* have spent too much time watching it and being totally amused.
I eventually did tear myself away from the fountain and made my way to the locker room. Which, locker room is such an understatement! Between the private spa baths, sauna, and steam room - I don't know if I've even been more detoxed or hydrated in my life. I would go sit in the steam room honestly every day. It just felt so good, and I'm saying that as someone from Louisiana who cries every time I feel a bit of humidity in the air. I swear, every time I came out of one of these amenities - my skin looked better. I was actually glowing - which is why working up a sweat in a steam room is so much more fun than say...actually going to the gym.
Something I found so neat was that there's this little bell that one of the spa attendants will come and ring at the half hour to let all the ladies know its time for their services. Everyone who works at the spa could not have been more lovely or attentive - they actually know your name and scheduled services. Such a small touch, but so important to feel even that much more pampered and special during your time there.
I didn't play with a lot of the products while I was there, but I did get my custom blend bar on, which was another perfect personal touch. I'm a spa veteran because I am very much about treating oneself, and you typically get a few oils to choose from for your service - but this was next level. I don't know if it was all the Hampton-inspired decor, but instead of my typical lavender, I had a really gorgeous blend made that was heavier and woodier. I was already feeling pretty good, but that brought my relaxation to a new level. One where I actually shut off my phone for once.
I had the pleasure of having two treatments during my visit - one which was a neck and scalp massage in the Garden Room, perhaps the only truly quiet place in L.A. Behind all of the lush green walls are little enclaves where you can just sit and enjoy your time. My massage therapist was so attentive to my past injuries and sensitivities - I really zoned out for the first time in a long time and let go. It only lasted 20 minutes, but that was all I needed. It put me into the right mind to enjoy the spa in the way it's meant to be enjoyed.
My second treatment was a blowout and believe me when I tell you - my hair has never felt or looked so good! If I lived closer to Woodland Hills, I would see Michelle once a week, easy. My blowout habit would turn into a full-blown obsession. The products they use, Shu Uemura, are out of this world AND color safe for my purple hair! Again, I have to mention how great my stylist was because she talked to me about my hair, my style, and what I really wanted that day. All this effort to individualize your experience is what really makes a day at Burke Williams a luxury!
Even though I've lived in L.A. for two and half years, there's still so much I'm discovering about this city and Burke Williams is now one of my absolute musts if you live here or you're traveling. Go steam, soak, sauna, and spa and let me know how it goes!
Has anyone noticed yet that I am obsessed with changing my look by changing my hair? I've been blue, grey, blonde, black, and now purple - but one of my favorite ways to get temporary change for shoot days and special occasions was by using my super silky 100% Remy clip-in hair extensions from Irresistible Me! I've actually thought about getting my stylist to take them to my current shade of grape, but I know at some point I'll be ready to be a honey blonde again with near waist long locks.
The thing I love about clip-ins is I find them so much less damaging that other forms of hair extensions. Plus, things that are easy and convenient are pretty much my favorite. I could have them in and styled in under 15 minutes. I also couldn't believe how well the color blended because I'm still not even sure what color my hair was when I started wearing them. I would always pretend it was an intentional ombre, but more like very very very grown our blonde highlights.
Since I already have hair this is pretty long and thick, and because I'm me, I decided to go for lots of length and lots of volume just for the drama of it all. However, there's a lot of variety available on their site - had I gone for more subtle look (for the first time ever) it would have been possible to have a set of extensions that could be styled for every day and day to night. I think that's really the fun with hair extensions like these - the ability to change your look from day to day and even hour to hour without damaging your hair or your pockets!
Last year was about getting myself into maintaining a consistent skin routine. This year is all about getting myself into naturally-derived products - even better if they're 100% cruelty free, vegan and gluten-free! That's why I was really excited to try BioClarity, because it's formulated with extracts like cucumber, green tea, chamomile, oat kernel, and licorice root. I've always been extremely fortunate to not have problems with my skin UNLESS I use the wrong products on it. Harsh chemicals leave my skin red, irritated, flaky, and dry - so pretty much not a good luck when you have to shoot every week. You know what makes a routine really easy to maintain? When it's actually numbered out for you - I admit I need some hand-holding when it comes to skincare still, so I'm really glad BioClarity makes it easy for me!
Step 1: Cleanse
Don't you always feel so accomplished when you wash your face? I swear it makes me feel like I can take on anything. I really like this cleanser because of the consistency - definitely not sticky or too goop-y. Part of the reason I rarely wear make-up is because of hate the feeling of my skin being suffocated, and some cleansers can feel like that as well. I just used enough to make a thin layer on my face, and it was perfect. My skin already looked a little more bright, or at least it felt that way!
Step 2: Treatment
Let me tell you - you can feel it working! It's not harsh or painful at all, but it is strong so I just use a dab of it. You know that feeling of your skin tightening when you add you gel after washing? That delicious feeling where you just KNOW you look younger and your skin is firmer even though its been about 30 seconds? That's the feeling you get from using this...and it's the best.
Step 3: Restore
This is actually my favorite part, because it means I'm almost done!, but also because it feels so refreshing and cool. I really love this system because it achieves balance - you do the "hard" part and get rewarded for the effort you put into it. You just use two pumps, pictured below, and I swear it will cover your whole face. Mickey, but why is it green? Will my face be green? It's developed with Floralux, a proprietary ingredient naturally-derived from chlorophyll, and nope - not even a little. Again, I really found myself impressed with the texture of all three products. At no point did I feel like it was too heavy or too powerful. Just use the recommended amount! You want it to last so you can do the full 4 week run to start.
I just got back from Las Vegas and I'm leaving for Mexico soon, I'll be toting around BioClarity with me to show you guys how great my skin looks (and how much smaller my pores are now) even after being exposed to airplane air and humidity. I'll also be tan for once in my life, thanks goodness!

What I have learned in my *almost* 30 years on this planet is that life with colorful mermaid hair is exactly 76% more more fun than life with normcore hair. Listen you guys - if you've ever wanted to dye your hair PLEASE DO IT. Just, you know, don't buy one of those at-home pastel dye kits because your hair will definitely not turn smokey grey-blue or icy pink from something that cost $8.99 and can be bought at your local CVS. Typically, if you have dark brown hair like me, you're going to have to lift your color to achieve a vibrant hue. I'm not afraid of a little bleach, but turns out since I've been growing out highlights for like five years, I didn't have to lighten my hair at all. All of this lush purple came from a quick custom color mixing and twenty minutes of letting it seep into my strands. That's it! It's not a scary process, and in the hands of a professional your hair will be safe. A professional, not your friend/cousin/little sister, a box of bleach, and a jar of Manic Panic.
Here's a list of reasons to dye your hair:
1. You will look like a mermaid - mermaids are notorious for having great hair
2. Colorful hair gives you even more of an excuse to not wear make-up
3. If you're having a bad day, your actually not because your hair is still an awesome color and you look v cool
4. When you're 80, you'll get to look back and be like - I used to have mermaid hair and I looked fly af
5. Every guy/girl that has ghosted you will come crawling out of the woodwork because you look so fly, and you can hit them with a "new hair, who dis?"
If you've been following this blog for a while, you know I used to have blue hair. I loved my blue hair - it was so ethereal. Until it faded down to a gnarly shade of Frankenstein"s Monster green, and then it wasn't at all. So purple it was - also, I've been wanting to do purple as a tribute to Prince since he passed earlier this year. That man was magic to me. I'm kind of excited to see what this color will fade to. Knowing my hair though, probably green again somehow. Let me know what color you've had or are going to try!
There's something I've really been on myself about in the past year and that is to improve my skincare regime. And by improve, I mean actually start one for myself. I've been pretty spoiled by having good genetics that have given me great skin my whole life but, like in most situation, being spoiled has led to me being lazy. Now that I'm coming up on 30, I can hear my mom saying, "Wash your face or you'll get wrinkles!" more clearly than ever. No wrinkles yet, thankfully, but it's never too early to start caring for my skin - especially as someone who lives in a huge city with high levels of pollution, that travels a lot (airplane air is murder on your face), and spends a lot of time shooting outside with some kind of make-up on. Being a boho girl, I've always been a big fan of all things natural and I SWEAR by the benefits of Resveratrol. I'm also a big fan of red wine, which is a good source of resveratrol and is one of the things that, I believe, makes a glass of red wine a day good for you. I've also heard that a glass of red wine before bed can help you lose weight, I'm not sure if that's true, but I'm not opposed to doing the research!
This is why I was so excited to try Vine Vera - it's resveratrol-based skincare. That means that these Antioxidant-rich products are not only super luxurious - literally all of the creams feel AMAZING -but also can deliver on the promises made to improve the sensitive and delicate skin of our faces and necks with their blend of carefully selected ingredients. "Never forget the neck!" - my mom, again.
Like my wine, I wanted to try something rich and vibrant so I went with the Malbec DNA Collection. Malbecs have such a lush and sumptuous taste and look, with the dark purple hue, I thought it would be perfect for my combination skin. I honestly don't even know which product I loved the most, they all work together in a perfect symbiotic relationship and complement each other. If I had to pick one, it would be the Midnight Cream because it's so light and gentle - it feels amazing on my face right before bed and I love how soft my face feels when I wake up. There's also the coolest melting pre-mask, something you'll have to try for yourself to see how it melts down to oil on your skin and then turns into a deep-cleaning foam to prep your face for those super fun looking masks below.
Disco Nap - a short nap, usually 20 minutes to an hour long that you take to get recharged before going out, usually to a bar or club.
"I had 2 Hand Grenades and a Purple Drank from Lafitte's this afternoon, I will literally die if I don't take a disco nap before we hit Pat O's"- something at least one person has slurred while in New Orleans.
Speaking of my beloved NOLA, I can't think of a better place to have packed up and brought along my new Disco Nap pillow from Miss With-it! I was disco napping through airports, on planes, and finally at The Lafayette Hotel New Orleans (my unproblematic fave, but more on that later) to prepare for the week ahead of me, during which I gained at least 10 lbs from macarons, champagne, and beignets alone.
Miss With-it! is just the cheekiest and most darling L.A.-based boutique with a range of creative designs and sassy sayings splashed across decor pillows and pretty pouches in pink, black, and white (what other colors do you even need?). Some of my favorites below:
See? Fun, fresh, flirty, and feminine. I'm thinking about add the "Champagne Is My Spirit Animal" pouch to my collection next. Or maybe "Sex Coffee And Rock 'N' Roll"? Let me know what you think and help me pick my next pretty from Miss With-it!
